Everyday Bravery: Let’s Get Physical

Get active! Try something physical that you've never done before not for the sake of getting fit or losing weight but to do something new!

From the time we are little girls on the playground, women are sent very different messages than men are. We’re told to be careful, not to climb too high. In fact, studies show that little boys are given encouragement and told how to tackle physical challenges on their own, while young girls are given words of caution and more hands-on assistance.

Here’s the problem: all that coddling has consequences later in life. It shapes how we think about ourselves and what we can do. So as we unravel that “perfect girl” conditioning, there’s no better way to jumpstart our bravery muscles than to tackle a physical challenge.

Your Challenge: Do Something Physical
Remember, it’s not about getting in shape, or losing weight. This Challenge is about the power you will feel when you see what your body is capable of!

  • Go on a hike
  • If you’re one of those people who “can’t” run – try jogging just for a minute
  • Try an exercise class that has always intimidated you, either because it seems hard or you’re afraid of looking silly
  • Get a set of hand weights and do some bicep curls (who is braver than Michelle Obama?!?)
  • Ride a bike
  • Take your dog on a new, longer route
